Virtual Reality is the answer! But you were probably wondering, which VR device will you buy that’ll transport you to the virtual world? For those who don’t know: Samsung and Google are two companies that produce electronics with cutting-edge technology. So, it’s not a surprise that these two are also up to date in creating VR devices. Samsung launched the Gear VR, while Google introduced the Daydream View. We previously discussed Gear VR and Daydream in separate articles. But in this article, we will help you decide which VR device is the best one for you by comparing the two.
What is Virtual Reality?
Let’s jump right in! Virtual Reality or VR is a simulated experience you can get with the use of computer technology. The standard VR system is the VR headset. It shows and lets users interact with the 3D world. The thing is, at first, VR was mostly used for medical and industrial purposes only. But, in recent years, VR is also being used for entertainment like gaming. And it doesn’t stop there. You can also experience VR through your phone. You just have to connect your phone into a headset and then you’ll be ready to go explore another world.
What is the Samsung Gear VR?
Gear VR is a headset that was first introduced by Samsung in November 2015, powered by Oculus. Its latest version was released in 2018 retailing at $219. This headset can only be used by connecting it to a selection of compatible Samsung Galaxy devices. Here’s the thing: Since the headset is powered by the smartphone connected to it, the performance is entirely dependent on the phone. The Gear VR headset also comes with a Gear VR controller. The controller can be used to navigate the virtual world. It has a touchpad and a trigger button.
What is Google Daydream View?
Daydream View is a VR headset powered by Google. It was launched together with the Google Pixel 2 in 2017. The retail price of Daydream is $99. It’s also a smartphone-powered VR headset. The selection of phones that can be connected to this device is not limited to Google phones. But here’s the kicker: Daydream comes with a controller that has motion detectors, a touchpad, and two buttons. It has a similar built as a Wii remote and is easy to use.
Gear VR vs Daydream: A Point to Point Comparison

Samsung Galaxy S6, S6, S6 Edge+Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 EdgeSamsung Galaxy S8, S8+, Note 8
Daydream is compatible with devices apart from Google produced phones. But the models that can be connected to it are also limited. Below is a list containing smartphones that can be connected to Daydream:
Google Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XLZTE Axon 7ASUS ZenFone 3 Deluxe, ARMotorola Moto Z, Z Force, Z2 ForceHuawei Mate 9 ProPorsche Design Mate 9Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+, Note 8Samsung Galaxy S9, S9+, Note 9LG V30, V30+, V40
2. Design
The main component of the Gear VR is hard plastic. It’s lightweight but chunky. A touchpad is built in the headset for navigation. On the other hand, the main component of Daydream, aside from plastic, is soft fabric. It doesn’t have controls attached to it since it has a separate controller included in the bundle. Both devices can be attached to the head with the straps. Although, the Gear VR has an additional strap. It loops through the headset and connects to the back, making sure the headset is intact. Although… The two devices both have a soft cushioned lining. The cushion makes skin contact comfortable for the users.
3. Controller
Gear VR was sold without a remote before. But Samsung decided to change this for the latest versions. Daydream is sold together with a wireless remote. Both controllers are composed of a touchpad, home, back, and volume control buttons. The two also show issues. They become janky and laggy.
4. Software
Gear VR lets the user go from app to app without having to take the headset off with the help of the remote. The Gear VR has numerous apps compared to Daydream. It also has an abundance of ports of games. Daydream, like Gear VR, lets users navigate without removing the headset. It has a variety of apps and games, but not as many as Gear VR. Although, it has an advantage when it comes to Google services like YouTube.
5. Longevity
Look: Many developments are being done to the world of Virtual Reality. It’s not a question that the current VR devices will be modified to cater to more users. Developers also do it to improve the experience users can get. These developments came to an end for Samsung when they made something clear at their latest launch. Note 10 will not support Gear VR. It gets worse: Daydream will also be discontinued by Google. They said that the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL will not support Daydream.
